Our aim is to use more renewable and recycled materials, eliminate waste in our operations, and change the way we design products and the services we offer to prolong the life of products and see them as resources for the future.
We’ve switched our entire lighting range to energy-efficient LED, for example, and all of the cotton we use in our products comes from more sustainable sources. We’re also working towards 100% renewable energy - producing as much as we consume. But we’re not done yet; we’re just getting started...
At IKEA, we have loads of products and solutions to make your business space more sustainable, some without you even noticing it. You can save lots of energy with our LED lamps, induction hobs, fridges, and reduce water usage by switching to one of our water-saving taps.
Good food storage products help prevent waste, and our waste sorting solutions make recycling simple. These may seem like small things, but that’s the beauty of small actions - they all add up.
We’ve switched our entire lighting range to energy efficient LED - one of the ways we are going all-in to tackle climate change.
Making more from less is part of the IKEA culture. We constantly look for ways to get the most out of every step in our production.
The two biggest raw materials used in our products today are cotton and wood. Ensuring that these are sourced and used in a sustainable way is crucial and can make a big difference for our planet.
With cotton, we have already reached one important goal. Since 2015, all the cotton we use for IKEA products comes from more sustainable sources. This means that the cotton is either recycled, or grown with less water, chemical fertiliser and pesticide, while increasing profit margins for farmers.
Our aim is that by 2020, this will be the case for 100% of the wood we use.
In 2020, we will produce as much renewable energy as we consume, thanks to huge investments in wind turbines and solar panels.
Our vision of “creating a better everyday life for the many people” also means to respect and create a better life for people and communities directly influenced by our business. From our co-workers and suppliers, to children and families living in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities - we always strive to promote equality, diversity and respect for human rights in everything we do.
We want to create a positive social impact for everyone across our value chain and believe that everyone deserves the right to be treated fairly.
One way to ensure this by working closely with our suppliers and through our code of conduct, called the IWAY Standard, plays an important role in these positive developments. It ensures a safe and healthy work environment and prevents pollution to air, ground and water, as well as at least minimum wages and overtime compensation.
We all play a part in the fight against COVID-19 - governments, companies, non-profit organisations and individuals in our communities. IKEA Southeast Asia and Mexico have donated more than EURO 343,000 in goods and services to 150 organisations between April and July 2020: beds, bedding, towels, toys, kitchen supplies and more. Our aim has been to give a helping hand to people who are most vulnerable to the virus, including migrant workers and seniors. This film focuses on our delivery of 145 flat-packed IKEA Shelters - now being used in hospitals, prisons and other organisations on the front lines of the pandemic.
